MDL AME refines vessel crane evaluations
15 March 2022
Maritime Developments (MDL) Asset Maintenance and Engineering (AME) division is supporting vessel owners with quick and to-the-point asset inspections.
The latest scope performed by MDL AME is an annual crane inspection on the Well Enhancer for Helix Energy Solutions.
The project included an MDL Senior Project Engineer performing the annual evaluation of 4 knuckle boom cranes on board the Dive Support Vessel (DSV) while docked in Leith, Scotland. Rocking motion and backlash checks were also performed as part of the assessment.
The full scope covered development of a work pack to support the onsite visit and delivery of an Annual Crane Assessment Report.
The inspection was carried out against MDL’s Crane Condition Evaluation checklist, which generated the final report with recommendations. The document was developed in line with LOLER and ILO152 regulations and covers a range of crane build standards.
Mike Varney, MDL Senior Project Engineer, said: "The project was on a short turnaround; however, we successfully prepared and executed the on-site evaluation of the cranes in only 4 days versus the quoted 6-day allowance which was a real achievement.”
This project adds to previous crane inspections carried out on Helix’ other DSV by MDL AME in recent months. These included a Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), to evaluate the condition of the cranes’ sheave, load cell, boom and jib pins; as well as rocking motion checks on the two auxiliary cranes, just days before the vessel’s sea trials.
Both scopes were fast-tracked to allow the client to progress with their work schedule safely and with peace of mind, with on-site execution within 3 days from enquiry.
MDL AME has an extensive track record of maintenance, overhauls and upgrades of lifting and pulling equipment, focusing heavily on efficient onshore planning prior to successful execution on location.
Using MDL’s in-house skillset, the division provides complete Project Management and Engineering; maintenance and integrity services on cranes; overhauling and manufacturing services on mechanical handling equipment; as well as maintenance and development of hydraulic systems, electrical systems and instrumentation.
