International oilfield service company Expro has taken delivery of the only e-line and logging unit of its kind in the North Sea which will shortly begin work for various customers in the UK sector of the North Sea.

The innovative e-line unit with integrated logging cabin has been specifically built for Expro to meet the demands and requirements of its customers.

The winch is a similar type of unit used by the wireline department for slickline operations, the difference being that the unit has a longer cabin so a logging rack can be fitted. This enables the logging engineer to sit with the slickline operator while the job is ongoing. As the unit is one piece of equipment, it doesn't take up as much space as having both a winch unit and an icebox (a pressurised container where the logging equipment and engineer would normally live).

The unit is compatible with all logging department tools and is suitable for slickline, braided line and e-line operations. It is fully pressurised and ties into platform fire and gas systems and boasts field-exchangeable dual-drum winch frames.

Investment in this unit was spurred by new work with Shell and Total and also projects in the southern North Sea with customers such as ATP, Perenco and Gaz de France.

John McGrath, Expro's logging manager for the Europe / Former Soviet Union region, said: “This is the first dual-use logging winch in the North Sea that incorporates the logging system and can run slickline and e-line, which is of great benefit to our customers.

“The benefits of having such a unit within Expro are second to none as it ties in with the company's multi-skilled crew philosophy that allows a job to be completed with fewer personnel than competitors offer. As well as saving time and money, any possible breakdown in communication between the engineers and the winch operator is taken out of the equation. This is an excellent addition to Expro's range of market-leading products and services.”
