Subsea UK Business Awards 2009

Held at the AECC, Aberdeen, 11-12th February 2009.

Company of the Year Subsea 7

Subsea 7 has grown to become one of the world's leading subsea engineering and construction companies, building towards its vision of being the subsea partner of choice in its sector.

2008 was an exceptionally good year for Subsea 7. It has demonstrated considerable financial and personnel growth, and significantly added to its state of the art fleet of deepwater pipelay and construction vessels, pipeline fabrication yards and spool bases, and offices, as part of a $1 billion capital investment programme between 2006 and 2010.

A range of successful innovative and training development programmes were launched to help colleagues realise their full potential, and a recent staff survey showed that 92% of people working at Subsea 7 would recommend it as a good place to work.

Subsea 7 is the winner of the Subsea Company of the Year award.

Greatest Individual Contribution to the Industry David Brookes (BP).

David Brookes has been in the Subsea pipeline and industry for over 25 years. Born in Dorset, he graduated from City University and joined BP in 1980 as a pipeline engineer. Since then, he has held increasingly responsible positions within BP.

Commenting on David's career, John Mair of Subsea 7, said: "I think Dave deserves this award, due to his international reputation, for his technical knowledge, his leadership and also the experience he's gained over the years on the projects.

Dave is extremely approachable. You can go to Dave for a third-party opinion, or to tap into his global network. He views sharing information as important.

Keith Williams of BP added: "David's one of the real statesmen of the subsea industry. He has worked in it for longer than most people, and the passion that he has, the delivery that he's done in his lifetime, and the significant contribution he's given to the collective part which is subsea, is immense.

David Brookes is the winner of the Subsea 09 Greatest Individual Contribution to the Industry award.

Best Young Personality James Knipe (MCS).

Since joining MCS in October 2007, James Knipe has demonstrated a high level of technical excellence and was consequently promoted from graduate to project engineer within six months.

Commenting on Knipe's success, Tim O'Sullivan, MD of MCS Aberdeen, said: "The advanced pipeline engineering that MCS has embarked on has been a key strategic path for us. James has been instrumental in developing that, not only for his technical ability, but also his ability to deal with people and clients.

"James has proven himself to be and excellent engineer, added Rae Younger, Structural Design Team Leader of MCS Aberdeen. "The dedication he's shown to his work and the commitment, certainly the technical level that he's performing the work at, means he's far ahead of what we'd expect for someone of his position.

Not wanting to shy away from helping others, James also supervised recent recruits to allow them to smoothly adapt to the office environment, and improve their initiation with MCS.

James Knipe is the winner of the Best Young Personality of the Year award.

Best Newcomer to the Subsea Industry - flexlife

flexlife was established by Stuart Mitchell, Carl-Petter Halvorsen and and John Maarsden in April 2007.

Their core business is the delivery of flexible pipe-based projects, from tie-backs to deep-water, including all aspects of pipe specification, system design, manufacturing management and integrity management in-field.

They recently launched a partnership with AGR Field Solutions, in which its patented solution to scan flexible risers in situ, and detect annulus flooding anywhere along their length, is coupled with AGR's Neptune System ROV Capability.

In year 1, flexlife had a turnover of £500,000. But after securing a number of contracts, they have since bought a new headquarters in Aberdeen, with space to expand the business.

Turnover for 2008 is predicted at £2,900,000.
