Fugro completed a year-long wellhead monitoring project for BP Americas Inc, measuring BOP stack motions and calculating wellhead fatigue in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said June 8.  The technology used in this successful test period can be used on other wells where fatigue capacity and potential loading are concerns.

The Fugro Wellhead and Riser Instrumentation Service (WARIS) was used during the 2014 drilling campaign in 6,000 ft of water. An ROV placed DeepData subsea motion monitoring pods on the BOP stack and riser. The pods have hydroacoustic modems and had battery capacity for one year. A topside system that included vessel motion monitoring and links to existing environmental monitoring systems was also provided.

Motion data from the BOP stack and riser were able to be processed along with topside environmental data, showing levels of motion and fatigue and their correlation with ocean currents and conditions.

The onshore data delivery system plotted and displayed all the data from WARIS, accessible to BP engineers worldwide, Fugro said.
