Maritime Developments will be using this year's Offshore Europe as a platform to highlight a key innovation which will help increase efficiencies and reduce costs at a groundbreaking North Sea development.

A leading provider of specialist back-deck equipment to the oil and gas industry, the company recently completed the delivery of its first complete flex-lay spread, including its portable vertical lay system (PVLS).

The new portable spread, which includes a vertical lay tower along with Maritime Developments’ patented 4-track tensioner and the company’s third-generation reel drive system (RDS), is due to begin work on one of the largest North Sea developments in recent years. It is to be used by a major international subsea contractor to install flexibles and risers.

Built at the company’s Peterhead facility, the PVLS stands at more than 23 metres in height. It is the first fully road-transportable vertical lay system which can travel to meet product reels at any destination in the world at very low cost.

The vertical tower is a self-sufficient system with all ancillary equipment built within its footprint and installed before lifting on board a vessel - reducing the deck space taken up by the system and the time the vessel spends idle in port.

The PVLS and the third-generation RDS will be the main talking points of Maritime Developments’ presence at this year’s Offshore Europe conference and exhibition in Aberdeen. The company’s stand (4D85) will also feature a 30-tonne winch – one of 40 delivered to a major offshore contractor for operations offshore Brazil.

Derek Smith, CEO at Maritime Developments, said: "We’re looking forward to the opportunity to speak to existing and potential customers about our company’s portfolio and explain how we can save clients time and money on their offshore projects.

"In particular, our portable vertical lay system, suitable for use on any vessel of opportunity, combines efficient handling, small footprint and integrated systems to secure a significant cut in vessel days, personnel and mission time.

"Despite continued uncertainty around the industry as a whole, we remain optimistic about the potential benefits our technologies can bring to the fore to assist our clients in maximising their operational efficiency in a difficult market.”

Established in 1999, Maritime Developments designs, manufactures and delivers back-deck equipment for the global oil, gas and renewables sectors from its bases in Aberdeen and Peterhead.

The business, which has its offices in Aberdeen and a manufacturing facility in Peterhead, offers a full suite of back-deck equipment for deployment and retrieval of subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF products), for sale and rental, alongside its design, engineering, manufacture and asset support services.
