Subsea Technological Challenges in Offshore Wind

Subsea Technological Challenges in Offshore Wind

04 October 2016
Venue: Village Hotel Club Aberdeen

This event has concluded. Presentations will be uploaded as and when permission is received.

The National Subsea Research Initiative (NSRI) is working with the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult to tackle the subsea technology challenges facing the offshore wind industry. In doing so the ORE Catapult has lent its voice to the NSRI Matchmaker database with industry led, technology themes for offshore wind to complement the existing oil and gas offering. The agreed themes are:

    Cables / Electrical Infrastructure
    Environmental Conditions
    Operations & Maintenance
    Sub-Structures & Foundations

More specific sub themes can be found on the NSRI Matchmaker website.

To support the expanded Matchmaker, NSRI and ORE Catapult ran this event on 4th October at The Village Hotel in Aberdeen. Presentations on each of the themes were delivered by industry experts from JDR Cables, Arup, Atkins & Seaway Heavy Lift. Delegates then broke into work groups to discuss potential solutions within each theme.

Solutions will be grouped using the Adopt, Adapt, Develop, Collaborate principle. Adopt refers to solutions already existing in other industries which can be adopted by offshore wind. Adapt to solutions already existing which may need some short term work in order to be suitable for offshore wind. Develop are longer term solutions still to be developed. Collaborate highlights opportunities for operators, developers, academia etc. to work together to bring about positive change.

The event followed a similar structure to previous, successful events from the NSRI on Subsea Storage and Oil & Gas Hackathons.

In due course the NSRI will release a report of the findings along with technology roadmaps outlining the way ahead. These will provide subsea companies with industry driven objectives where an identified future market exists.
