Global subsea opportunities explored at Aberdeen event

15 June 2018

The ways in which Scottish Enterprise can support the UK subsea supply chain were highlighted at an event in Aberdeen.

Organised by industry body Subsea UK, attendees were given an update on Scottish Enterprise’s oil and gas subsea action plan which sets out the key steps to growing Scotland's share of the oil and gas market, while supporting diversification into other sectors. NSRI director of research and market acceleration, Tony Laing, discussed the work its doing to further support the sector.

Delegates were given a detailed insight into how Scottish Enterprise has been working with industry, partners and other stakeholders to ensure the appropriate level of investment is made into the supply chain, research and test facilities and new technology. This has included the creation of the Balmoral Subsea Test Centre in Aberdeen.

Representatives from more than 15 companies attended the event to learn how global subsea markets are predicted to rise from £50bn to £150bn by 2035. The opportunities for diversification into other industries out-with oil and gas were highlighted, including defence, wind, wave and tidal, deep-sea mining and aquaculture.

Gary Soper, Scottish Enterprise subsea strategic relationship manager, said: "Engaging with industry is a vital part of what we do. Events like this give us an opportunity to meet face to face with companies and ensure that what we are doing is relevant to the industry and raise awareness of the support we can give companies.

"We want to make sure the Scottish subsea sector is working to its full potential, this includes raising awareness of opportunities in international markets and diversification. The skills and supply chain across the subsea sector in Scotland is very strong and there is a high level of confidence in the industry. We are looking to grow this and ensure that Scotland remains at the forefront of the subsea sector.”

Tony Laing, added: "This was an excellent event which highlighted the exciting opportunities which exist in the subsea market. It provided an invaluable opportunity for companies to see what support exists from both NSRI and Scottish Enterprise.”
