Transferable skills
As a member of the UK’s armed forces, military personnel possess transferrable skills applicable to a wide range of roles.  From logistics, leadership, problem solving and adaptability, to teamwork, construction, and planning and preparation, many of these valuable skills can be applied to roles in the underwater industry.

Roles in the underwater industry can have clear synergies with posts in the military.  Onshore positions in the underwater industry can include logistics, planning, engineering, maintenance, electronics and mechanics, while offshore roles can cover safety, navigation, inspection, marine science, ROV piloting and diving.

About the underwater industry
The UK’s underwater industry employs around 51,000 people and generates £9.2billion annually to the UK economy, with exports accounting for over a third of this value.  Supporting the industry is an extensive supply chain that offers an a wide range of vocations, many suitable for those transitioning out of the armed forces.

Considered to be a world leader, the UK’s underwater industry has been at the forefront of innovation for decades, with pioneering technologies developed for use in the North Sea oil and gas industry being utilised in the energy sector around the world and now also in other underwater sectors such as offshore wind and wave and tidal energy.  The UK has been a pioneer in floating offshore wind, with the mechanisms that support the turbines first being conceived, developed and installed in UK waters.  While work continues apace to advance wave and tidal energy technologies to deliver green energy and contribute to the energy transition and the drive to net-zero.

Robotics and automation form a central part of the underwater industry, just like in many areas of the armed forces.  Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) have all been developed and are utilised across multiple sectors for inspection, repair and maintenance operations, often controlled by individuals on the beach.

Our oceans and seas help power and drive the global economy.  The underwater industry forms part of the wider Blue Economy, which encourages the sustainable use, innovation and stewardship of our oceans and is currently estimated to be worth $2.5trillion and predicted to grow further in the coming decades.

With a focus on offshore renewable energy, helping to sustain a steady supply of seafood, maintaining national and energy security, and improving the marine environment, the sectors that make up the underwater industry are playing their part in the global drive to net-zero.
