Global Underwater Hub, in partnership with STEM Returners and ECITB (the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board), is a launching a new pilot programme for 2024 to attract talented people with STEM expertise back into the workplace, particularly the underwater industry.

Ahead of the programme commencing in early 2024, an online insights session is taking place on Thursday, 30 November at 11am.  This will provide GUH member companies with background on the initiative, how it will operate, what commitments are required from employers, how funding for the scheme will work and an opportunity to gauge whether the programme is the right fit for their business.

This is a no obligation, free-to-attend online session.  Sign up to attend using the ‘Attend’ button at the top of the page.

About the programme
Global Underwater Hub has partnered with STEM Returners and ECITB to deliver this new industry-wide programme aimed at supporting those returning to the workplace following a career break or those looking to transition into a new industry sector.

With an incredibly tight skills market, the programme allows employers to attract candidates from a new talent pool and can help support workplace diversity, inclusion and equality.  It gives candidates with a science, technology, engineering or mathematics background a supported route back to a rewarding career.  The programme provides employers with a diverse range of talented professionals and helps them to view CV gaps in a different way.

The pilot is open to employers across the underwater industry and ECITB will provide funding for 10 returners to encourage relevant employers to participate and benefit from the programme.  The usual cost to an employer, per returner, is £3,500+VAT.

The process of matching employers and candidates will begin in January-February 2024, so interested employers are invited to register their interest by Friday, 29 December 2023.

As part of the programme, employers must commit to offering selected candidates a paid 12-week work placement that has the potential to lead to a permanent role.  In addition to the experience gained from the work placement, STEM Returners will provide support for the candidate in respect of advice, career coaching, networking opportunities and mentoring.

STEM professionals
Global Underwater Hub has partnered with UK organisation STEM Returners to deliver this new programme.  STEM Returners provides a link between companies seeking STEM experienced professionals and those with the relevant expertise, knowledge and skills returning to work after a career break.

These are highly qualified and experienced individuals that may have backgrounds in engineering, science, research and development, data analysis or many other areas, and whose skills are transferable into different industry sectors.

Candidates participating in this scheme are actively wishing to restart their careers.  These individuals, who have a gap in the career history on their CV, are highly educated and experienced and offer recruiters access to a diverse new talent pool.

Previous candidates that STEM Returners has matched with employers have had the following credentials:
  • 74% held a degree or master’s qualification
  • 64% were previously a manager
  • 58% had more than five years’ experience prior to their career break
