Subsea Electrical Power and Communications Systems - The Challenges and Opportunities

Global Underwater Hub - Bristol
Subsea cables form a critical part of the national infrastructure of any coastal country, delivering both power and communications connections. The reliability and security of these cables has been highlighted in recent years due to failures and concerns relating to potential attacks. The topic is the focus of a Global Underwater Hub event in Bristol on Wednesday, 26 June.
Subsea Electrical Power and Communications Systems – the challenges and opportunities, is a one-day conference exploring the systems, reliability, inspection and protection of these underwater assets.
Transition, decarbonisation, digitisation and electrification are key factors driving the future of the energy industry and are contributing to the development of alternative offshore energy sources. This is leading to novel technologies coming to market, including electric ROVs and battery storage and charging solutions.
For coastal communities, with careful management, our oceans and seas offer opportunity and a breeding ground for further innovation in the decades to come. Coupled to the opportunities are challenges, not least the high operational and technological risks brought about from the pressures of operating hundreds of metres below the waterline, the corrosive nature of saltwater and marine growth.
With an increasing number of assets and partners, the underwater space is becoming more complex and crowded, creating competition for space on the seabed and in any one water column. This growth in underwater infrastructure also heightens the risk of disruption from hostile actors without appropriate defence measures in place.
This important conference will bring together stakeholders and subject matter experts to discuss the challenges, share lessons learnt and present advances in technology and seabed asset management.
