US Navy RFI for free space optics communications

16 March 2023

Global Underwater Hub (GUH) has established a partnership with London Tech Bridge, a collaboration between the United States Navy and Royal Navy to foster improved connectivity, agility and innovation.

London Tech Bridge seeks to support dialogue, joint investment and cooperative development between the two navies, while also engaging with academia and industry to harness technology more rapidly for sailors and marines.

Underlining the potential for cross sector collaboration in the underwater sectors, GUH is highlighting a recently issued request for information (RFI) received from London Tech Bridge.

The United States Navy (or The Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Atlantic) is assessing the impact of transformative technologies that enable divers to operate free space optics communications systems in undersea environments.  The RFI requests information about any state of the art/novel products and technologies available in order to understand the market availability and technical characteristics of tactical underwater free space optical communications capabilities.

The purpose of the RFI is to request information from companies on tactical, underwater free-space optical communications (FSOC) transceiver systems that are commercially available and/or are ready for final operating capability demonstration, i.e., technology readiness level (TRL) 7 or greater.

If your company is interested in learning more and viewing the full RFI, please contact GUH's strategic programme manager Steve Fernie by Friday, 24 March.

Please note that completed responses to the RFI must be submitted to the US Navy by Friday, 31 March 2023, 17:00 Eastern Time.
